Seat selection (777-300)
Given the choice between 1K, 9A and 12A - which seat is better (777-300). Also, any advantage to the smaller rear J cabin? How is the temperature on these flights in general?

I prefer the front cabin. I've had plenty of hot stuffy flights on Air NZ and crew have told me the rear cabin always seems to be a little warmer but I don't actually know if that is true or not.

Smaller rear cabin will have all the pax walking through when boarding, front cabin better for this reason IMO.
1K is at the front and some people may be bothered by the light, however given these choices I'd still go with 1K personally.

I just flew on the 789 in 01A and didn’t find proximity to the galley/light an issue.
12A is close to PE and possible babies in bassinets.
Finally note that AirNZ withholds a couple of seats for load control to allocate - these appear as ‘taken’ but might become available on the day.
On the 77W looks like 04A and 05A are withheld Note the absence of the ‘head’ icon in the screenshot of a dummy booking below, whereas 03A does have the occupied ‘head’ icon.

So on the 777, would be either 7 A or K.
787 V1 is 6AK
787 V2 is 9AK.
Some find or think they will find those seats noisy from the bathroom/galley. I don't, but also do not have the greatest hearing.
Others here prefer the front for their own good reasons.

I'm a last row window front cabin kind of a guy.

The reverse herringbone layout means that you are better to have adjacent seats in the same ‘column’ eg 04A and 05A.
Seats in the same row (eg 05J and 05K) are not that close and angled in - so not very suitable for talking. Mostly you just get a view of the feet of passengers across the aisle.
See pic below for the view from seat 12K. You can see the stowed screen and legs of the pax in 12J. You can also see the pax in 11J turning around to talk to the pax in 12J

I'm sorry to say this is an oxymoron when it comes to NZ.
None of the seats is the only answer.
As TK mentioned, PE is your best bet if convo is important.
Extended conversations between seats in BP will require a chiropractor upon landing.
