The current codeshare agreement with QF means NZ gets the benefit of feed on both sides of the Tasman without incurring extra costs of operating Australian domestic flights themselves (let alone having to compete with QF).

and NZ can happily sell tickets from NZ to any Australian destination, knowing that most of its customers only care that they get Airpoints and it connects them from all of the domestic destinations. It can now sell tickets from the Australian locations it codeshares with QF, but knowing QF competes for that traffic (but again it benefits from the NZ domestic feed for some of those tickets). It's comfortable for NZ and doesn't stop it increasing frequencies or even routes (CBR eventually?) between NZ and Australia.
