Qatar Airways Expanding in the Region

The Herald today have picked up on a Bloomberg report that Qatar Airways will soon fly direct from Qatar to Auckland and onto Chile as part of their expansion in the region. This will bring a very strong Oneworld carrier through Auckland...

That's not quite what the article says.

QR has plans to fly to NZ and Chile. Nothing there about flying between AKL & SCL (and why should they when LA flies this route and QF also serves SCL-SYD).

DOH-AKL that's got to be one painful flight in Y, at-least its 3-3-3.

While in Italy recently they had PER/MEL ad's very where, maybe more likely to be an DOH-PER-AKL or DOH-MEL-AK?

Its speculation, herald ran with it anyhow. No surprises there. 16.5 hours flight, no thanks.

Why wouldn't they just tag SYD-AKL on to DOH-SYD (or DOH-MEL or DOH-ADL) a la EK?

Because 2 stop to Europe is much less attractive, when many other carriers can do it with just 1 stop

Remember the last time Grant Bradley ran with a story and didn't understand that "The Americas" wasn't just North America right before Air NZ announced Argentina..

What the article also says is Sichuan Airlines are looking at New Zealand as well (presumably from CTU). Extraordinary!

What ever route Qatar Airways decided to fly their website certainly gives the impression they are on the way to Auckland - http://www.qatarairways.com/global/e...-auckland.page

Not necessarily, they have a page for ADL where they don't fly too. Presumably because they codeshare CX.

A cursory search for LHR-AKL on QR website curiously shows flying QR LHR-DOH-PER then NZ to AKL, both ways or LHR-DOH-KUL on QR and MH KUL-AKL.

Yay! A second middle east carrier that pays shite wages to flight attendants and has a "no gays" HR policy. How exciting for the land of the long white cloud!

How do those who fly Emirates to Europe regularly enjoy the AU stopover? I guess if you're sitting in business or first the extra flight time and stopover compares to a single stop are OK, but as much as I love spending time in a plane I'd still opt for fewer stops any day.
