NZ metal, VA codeshare: access to extra legroom/Space+ seats
Hi all
As part of my general drift away from NZ (well, from Airpoints, anyway) and towards VA, I'm looking at booking BHE-AKL-SYD on NZ metal but utilising the VA codeshare (mostly because it's $100+ cheaper doing it this way). I'm comfortable around the miles and status points earning (including nothing for the BHE-AKL segment) but the thing that now gives me pause (having been burned with SQ metal / VA codeshares) is how seating assignments would work. Can anyone shed any light?
Specifically:
Also, it would be great to hear if there are any other NZ/VA codeshare quirks I should be aware of...

Specifically:
- Can I access the extra legroom frequent flyer seats on AKL-SYD in the same way I can if booked with an NZ number? I don't have any NZ status these days, but I'm silver on VA and *G via Asiana.
- At what point can I assing seats? Does VA's website let me select seats at time of booking? Assuming I can find out what my NZ booking reference is, am I able to use NZ's online seat selector tool?
Also, it would be great to hear if there are any other NZ/VA codeshare quirks I should be aware of...

If you're booked on the VA codeshare on an NZ operated flight, you technically will have no status. As they don't recognize *G as being valid when your not on an ticket issued with an NZ flight number.
So basically:
Booked as VA (Operated by NZ)
No *Gold benefits
Booked as NZ (Operated by NZ)
Full *Gold Benfits

If your a NZ or VA silver or higher on VA metal (Flight code does not matter) then you get priority seating (*A partners get nothing even if booked on *A code)

To select Space+ you'd need to get the NZ PNR and then try and get your Asiana *G number into the booking which should open up Space+ seating on the NZ seat selector tool. VA Silver won't have access to Space+ from memory. So maybe a call to NZ to get the Asiana number put in there.

Although if you have a fare that allows checked luggage, there's an additional allowance.
