This doesn't seem to apply for the standard Airpoints Credit Cards.
From the Terms and Conditions: (1) Double Status Points offer applies to spend on Airpoints™ Platinum, World and Business credit cards for the period from 1 May to 31 July 2015 (inclusive). Offer does not apply to Airpoints™ credit cards applied for after 1 May 2015.

Unfortunately, they did change:
3. No Refund
3.1 The Koru Membership Fee and Joining Fee are both non-refundable. For example, if a Koru Member becomes an Airpoints Gold or Gold Elite Member during the term of their Koru Membership, and decides to terminate their current Koru Membership, the Koru Member’s Membership Fee and Joining Fee will not be refunded.

When I made gold they were fairly happy to transfer my ~6 months of remaining Koru to another Airpoints member, but they wouldn't put it on hold or offer a refund. They also indicated that it was a one time offer - so if I needed it a second time they answer would likely be no.
I'd only been a Koru member for a short time though, so I have no idea whether they'd be more flexible if you were a long term member.

I posted years ago that NZ would no longer put KC membership on hold.
The reason they gave is the fact that the Airponts system and the KC system were not linked so that they could not suspend/restart KC membership automatically and therefore the reliance on a manual process was too prone to error and potential misuse.
At the time, 5 years ago?, they were going to amed the T&C but were also considering the transfer option, especially for corporate memberships.

thank god for double status points which will soften the blow of a $1400 vet bill! Might actually get back to silver this year which was looking doubtful
