OT: 9 dead in NZ's worst air disaster in 17 years
The bodies of nine people killed in a fiery plane crash at Fox Glacier airport will remain at the scene until tomorrow.
The accident occurred at 1.15pm this afternoon when the plane, carrying a party of skydivers and tourists, crashed at the end of the runway.
It is understood the skydive plane reportedly burst into flames on takeoff at the small airport.
Greymouth Police said the dead include five New Zealanders and four passengers from Australia, Ireland, Germany and the United Kingdom.
The embassies of each overseas victim have been advised and their families were currently being told of the crash, police said.
The names of the dead will not be officially released until 9am tomorrow morning.
