Economy award ticket in class X booked through Delta won’t allow free seat selection. Website seems to indicate it should be free since this is between Europe and the USA.

When you say "website", what website do you mean? Please post a link to the specific page you are quoting from. And give us more information on what, exactly, you have booked (what frequent flyer program? What operating airline?) and what, exactly, is not as you expected.
