How do ex-AMS upgrades on DL/KL metal work?

How do ex-AMS upgrades on DL/KL metal work?
Hi all -

I've read posts here and there that on ex-AMS flights you can do paid/mileage upgrades on DL or KL operated flights?

I had a few questions

1. Does it matter if its DL or KL ticketed?
2. When using miles is it SkyMiles or FlyingBlue?
3. What is the process for getting it done

3. Ask at check-in, transit desk, or lounge.

Pretty sure if upgrading via an agent, it is always a combination of miles (25K for TATL) and cash, not one or the other. Although some have reported getting automated cash-only upgrades offers at check-in.

Sometimes it's just the 25K miles TATL. No cash. Also Had 37,5K miles once, no cash either. Depends on booking class I think

Question if going through AMS back from europe does it have to been be done in AMS or can it be done at the departure airport before (e.g. staring at HAM).

Additionally, can this only be done day of departure?
