Upgrade without Cert OR a request?

I'd be interested in knowing if this has happened to any of the rest of you recently - I got upgraded this morning (MCO - YYZ) without using a certificate OR asking the gate agent?

I've been an Aeroplan member for more than a decade, have reached Prestige a few times, and Elite over this past year, and this has never happened to me on a North American flight before...

Was the flight full in the back? I got a few upgrades when Y was oversold.

That's the way it is supposed to work when the flight is oversold in the back. They upgrade status passengers to make space for non-status in the back. It's called an operation upgrade (OP UP) and it has happened to me a few times a year. Most often in the summer or on family destination routes, like Florida where people don't pay to sit up front.
