Chicken or Fish?
Fish or Chicken? The most familiar three words of any long haul passenger. It is yet again my turn to hear that irresistable offer. An easy choice you may say, but the question this time, is which will I be? Read on and see what I mean.
Actually folks, I prefer to request a special meal on trans-Pacific flights, to break the usual meal monotony, get served first, dine at a leisurely pace, and still get to the commode and off to sleep before most everyone else. You also lose the omlette breakfast in the morning, in favour of something that is appetising.
The PROBLEM is, you can get stuck with that most delicious, foreign tasting, specially wrapped dinner delicacy up in business class if you use your SSWU and don't cancel ahead of time. But sometimes we don't know ahead of time that that coveted reclining seat will really gonna turn up for us, do we?
Now factor this into the equation. Like any other AC booster, I watched from afar with terrific enthusiasm at the 777 roll out, hitting many other web sites that featured fabulous photos of the new plane inside and out, and together with the old TCA plane too. Now it's my turn to get on board.
That said, here is the dilemma. My NRT-YYZ round trip leaves two days before the new planes are scheduled to go into service on this route. Serependipity aside, I've a fat chance of hooking up a new seat in the front on my way back, as I can only queue up 4 days before June 9th. Needless to say, it'll be nice to be on a still fresh smelling plane and a firm new seat in economy (check out 19C&K for legroom!), but I dont expect any more so early in the game.
When the new 777s came out, they sometimes got subbed in for scheduled aircraft on various X/C, short-haul and pond-hopping routes. What do you suppose the chances are that they would put a new one on AC 1/2 a couple of days before the planned inaugural flight?
I'd sure love to be one of those sardines in the new herringbone seats while the smell is still fresh. Or should I chicken out and resign my last trip to being in the old (Airbus) cabin and with a regular meal one last time, just in case? If other F'Talkers reading this learn that substitutions are taking place before June 1st, please post your details here, too.
See you in the air somewhere.
