Harmony goes under

Just heard on the radio that Harmony stops flying April 9th. Full refunds will be given to passengers ticketed after that date.

Not at all unexpected, but sad nonetheless.
Having used HQ on private charters, they are an outstanding company to fly with.

It was in December when the original thread on this topic began. Another FlyerTalk prediction validated. (sadly)

This is really sad. Hopefully they'll still fly charter flights like what Canjet is doing.

They were a very nice airline - nobody disputes that. But a bad business plan is still a bad business plan even if it employs the nicest people and gives every passenger champagne and caviar in Y. That's why its demise was predictable.

Indeed, I think Gary Collins saw the writing on the wall, and was likely trying to convince Ho of that, but to no avail. Collins got out in time though - untarnished name.

It wasn't as bad as you may think. They concentrated on the domestic trunk routes and put their focus on China flights which would have proved very successful, were it not for political stumbling blocks. If Canada were granted Approved Travel Status in China, I'm HQ would have done very well indeed.

Nothing on their website about this.

It was the wrong plane for North American operations, period. If China had come along, perhaps with a larger aircraft, they might have offset domestic losses and gained some traction but it did not come along. And Ho, who presumably has a better understanding of the Beijing grapevine, should have known that there were difficult to resolve obstacles between the two countries. Then again, the lack of ATS hasn't stopped AC from making China one of its largest overseas destinations.

Does 'going under' mean the same as stopping your business and refunding customers for outstanding tickets?;)

airbus320 Mar 27, 2007 1:08 pm

I hope the staff find jobs elsewhere.

Even with China they would have been squeezed between AC and the Chinese carriers. It all goes to prove Canada is really just a 2 airline market. Too bad. I feel sorry for those who bought those YVR-YYZ passes Harmony has been flogging recently.

Not sure who posted it on the earlier thread, but it was something about "Harmony being not sure exactly who they are" a leisure carrier to HNL, PSP, OGG etc. or a business airline to YYZ. I think that was telling.
