Using SWUs for multiple sectors

Hi all

Is there a limit to the number of sectors you can upgrade with a single SWU, provided there is nothing that qualifies as a "stopover" in between them? As part of a RTW we're flying JFK-YVR-YYJ-YVR-SYD all on one day, with just under 4 hours in YYJ (the YYR-YYJ-YVR segments are on AC Jazz Dash-8 with no business class). Should we be able to upgrade JFK-YVR-SYD with one SWU apiece or would we need 2?

Also, is the number of certs affected by when/if the individual upgrades clear? Eg if we got the JFK-YVR upgrade but at the time of checking in at JFK the YVR-SYD upgrade was still waitlisted but subsequently cleared in YVR, would we be asked for another SWU at YVR?

I'm confused! Any advice welcomed... Thanks!

1 upgrade cert is good for origin to destination including connections. Check your ticket to see if it shows YVR, YYJ, YVR as a connection on your way to SYD; if not, then you'll need 2 cert. One for JFK-YVR and another for YVR-SYD. Assuming it shows as a cnx, then if your JFK-YVR cleared at ckin, then they can notate your record so agent won't ask for another one in YVR.

What is the rule if one is travelling on two PNR's, but the connection time is within 4 hours for domestic and / or 24 hours for an international? Can we use one upgrade or are two required?

Thanks Andrew, that's exactly the info I was after. I *heart* FT!

Unlikely you can use a single cert, considering they don't even check baggage through on separate PNR's anymore.

Not true - they do thru check bags for AC to AC seperate tickets, just not AC to other airlines seperate tickets. (http://www.aircanada.com/en/travelin...t/checkin.html)

The wording on the Certs does say valid for origin to destination upgrade including connections, so although it'd probably be a hassle to notate the second booking with remarks that the cert has been lifted, it should feasibly be able to be done AFAIK. Stand to be corrected.

In the case of domestic-to-domestic cnx which are part of an international itinerary, does the 4h rule or the 24h rule apply?

E.g. if one flew something like YVR-YUL-YYZ-LHR with a stop in YUL of more than 4h but less than 24h, would one be able to use a single cert for all legs?

From past experience, yes.

Yes, but make sure there is a note on the file that the certificate was lifted at the point of boarding your first segment, and keep all your boarding passes in case there is a dispute at the YUL gate.

OK, let me make my hypothetical itinerary really extreme, so you'll see what I'm getting at:

Monday: LAX-YVR AC555 Dep 1545 Arr 1845
Tuesday: YVR-YUL AC112 Dep 1415 Arr 2155
Wednesday: YUL-YYZ AC427 Dep 2000 Arr 2120
Thursday: YYZ-LHR AC848 Dep 2020 Arr 0835

(This isn't actually a valid itinerary, though there are itins that allow this many stops)

Could one stretch a single SWU to upgrade on all 4 flights, since each of the stops is less than 24h? And even it were possible in theory, wouldn't the agents at YYZ on Thursday get a bit shirty on being told that the cert was uplifted at LAX on Monday?
