I know there used to be a stereotype that French speakers would take every opportunity to freeze out an English speaker, whether that was in Montreal, Quebec City, or Paris. I wouldn't know, but I've been told it used to happen some. But nowadays, it happens rarely if at all, and with my limited experience it's never happened to me (I do attempt to say something in French, probably to the great pain of the listener). What tends to happen when you go to Montreal is that the person you are talking to sizes you up as an anglophone or a francophone, and speaks to you in the correct language. I assume it's my lack of fashion sense that gives it away in my case. Of course, not every single person speaks English, so in those cases you just do the best you can. Really nothing to worry about at all.

Edit: I haven't been to Quebec City. So who knows how they act there.

Lesson on how to hijack a thread!!

This is the perfect example of thread hijacking!! What were we talking about originally? Can't even remember without looking back at the thread title! :D

Thanks to shore9, who may not know French at all but may have multiple talents.... :rolleyes:

Peut-etre qu'il faudra organiser une reunion pour les francophiles de AC pendant le festival d'hiver du Quebec.

(BTW you must have a pleasant temperature these days- hope the ice sculptures are still on)

We will get them to drink past the 3 am curfew :D

Hit it again and that tells me I need a life.

All it takes is 3 or 4 hits on the keyboard for you to determine you need a new life? Exactly what did they teach you over the pond - how to be a computer nerd :confused: :p

We're having great winter weather this week for the 51st Carnaval and the ice sculpture competition started last night.

This evening I'm going to a fun annual event : The Mayor of Calgary's Reception at the Hilton Panorama Room. "Please join other Business Leaders and Elected Officials in a relaxed exchange of Cultural and Business Information in the Spirit of The Calgary/Québec Twinning"; this means we'll be drinking Rye & Cokes in plastic beer cups bemoaning the NHL labour situation; a true All-Canadian event.

"Dress : Carnaval/Western and/or Business attire".

What to wear, what to wear ? :confused: Funny how they don't mention "The Alberta Thong" as being suggested dress for the event :D

shore9, you have until 1600 to drive the 230 km up here from BU and I'll take you to this party as my guest; be aware of the dress code !

Just ask any university student who goes there either for the Carnival or Spring Break.

Fun has no language barrier :-:

I shouldn't have gone to bed so early last night. Looks like everyone stayed up and had a rollicking time. ;)

And for the enlightened few who use Macs ...

é = opt e, e
è = opt `, e
à = opt `, a
ê = opt i, e
ç = opt c
î = opt i, i

and, in case you go to Europe, € = opt + shift 2

Honest to God ! 5 minutes ago one of Bonhomme Carnaval's handlers walked into our reception area looking for another firm's office where the Big Snowman was expected as a guest of honour at some function !

They had the wrong address so my assistant and I ended up in the parking lot trying to coax Bonhomme out of his van. He graciously accepted ! :D

I have photographic evidence of this but don't know how to post pix. Suggestions ?
