Flying To Cuba

We're heading to Cuba in February. Is Air Canada permitted to overfly US airspace on a direct route to Havana?

What about Cubana Airlines. Are they permitted? or must they route out into the atlantic until they hit Canadian airspace over the Maritimes?

Speaking from experience a couple of years ago with AC to Varadero. (Sorry Parnel-I caved for a cheap vacation) AC is allowed to overfly US airspace. Otherwise it would be a couple of hours longer cirlcling the southeast US. Not sure about Cubana but I will assume the same.

Cubana is not allowed to overfly american airspace. They stop in YQX on there way to/from Europe.

On a slightly related topic. Arab countries will not permit an aircraft to land in there country if the flight has departed or OVERFLOWN Israel. Flights between Europe and the middle east will make a little detour north over Lebanon.

....
Cubana have a specified air route that they are allowed to fly when going from HAV to YYZ. No deviations allowed. The same for American carriers who over fly Cuba.

Cubana stops in YQX because their aircraft do not have the range for non-stop to Europe.

Very seldom do you see Cubana aircraft in YQX now. They use Airbus A330s that can easily do the European routes nonstop.

Gander was once a popular location to Defect to the west before the Berlin Wall fell when Cubana would stopover here on routes between Eastern Europe and Havana. I remember seeing the old Russian built Iliushin aircraft in to refuel many times. Also Aeroflot.

Even if they do, Americans will just see it as another AC aircraft flying over their airspace...not as a threat.
