Question about simplified fare structure

I ran across an "R" class fare the other day on PHL - YYZ. I normally wouldn't have noticed except we had a 319 for a change instead of an RJ and when I tried to upgrade, I was told that the "R" class was a web fare and non-upgradeable. The only way to upgrade was to change to a U class fare which would have cost me the princely sum of $30 odd plus tax.

Since the flight was only an hour, I didn't bother, but when I look on the web, there are only the Fun, Latitude and Freedom and Exec fares for this route. I assume the fare classes for these labels to be Q,U,Y and C or J.

Is there more than one class of fare that applies to the Latitude or Freedom label and if so what takes precendent the booking class? or the label applied to the fare?

Thanks to all you rate experts out there.

DF

Booking class determines upgradeability; not the fare label. 'R' is FUN fare and only upgradeable using S/SWU.

FREEDOM = Y
LATITUDE = A or U or M.
[M is FREEDOM on Transborder flights]

Thanks Empress. The alphabet soup is a little dizzying.

Welcome back, hope your travels were fruitful
