Same-day turn question

Hello braintrust,

I'm currently flying YYZ-YVR-OGG-YVR-YYZ as a same-day turn in OGG, coming back immediately on the same Max I arrive on. In YVR currently.

I've not been able to check-in online for the OGG-YVR-YYZ return, and the lounge agent is unable to do so. She checked with whoever's on her support line, and says I won't be able to check in for the return until some point in the future. She wasn't entirely clear whether it would be:
- when YVR-OGG pushes back;
- when YVR-OGG takes off; or
- when YVR-OGG lands

But she said it's because it would cause problems with the oubound.

The latter two scenarios are pretty much the same since it's a Max which means no WiFi.

Time on the ground in OGG is supposed to be 1:02, which puts me right up against the deadline for check-in.

I've flown same-day turns in the past, but not for a few years, and I seem to recall not having this kind of problem in the past -- I'm pretty sure, for example, I've flown one-day in-and-outs to NYC where I've been checked in for my return before my departure. But that was in the beforetimes, so maybe my mind is playing games on me.

Have dropped an email to Concierge -- general inbox, I don't know the email aliases for the airport-specific ones -- to see if they have any advice and or can do anything.

But I'd also appreciate any insights the community here might have.

- Based on any experiences, when should I be able to check in for the return?
- I know no-shows result in any remaining segments being cancelled, but I'm unsure as to when it becomes a no-show. If I'm not able to check in at an hour, will it count as a no-show at 0:59 and cancel, or does it only become a no-show when you don't board, in which case I should be able to check in online upon landing or even with the agent at the desk in OGG?

Would appreciate any advice that will help me not feel like I'm white-knuckling it until we land.

Thanks!

You could give a friend your info and have them check you in while you're in the air.

It's your choice, but I would never book a one hour turnaround when you have to clear immigration and customs.

You are, of course, correct. My mistake.

US in-bound immigration is done in YVR.

You should be able to checkin 24 hours before your first flight. In the case of your return (OGG-YVR-YYZ) that should be 24 hours before the departure time of the OGG-YVR flight. If you're within that window now, then you should be able to do a checkin now. I have done same-day turns before, and had the YYZ concierge be able to check me in and provide me with all (including the return flights) boarding passes, all before my very first flight departs -- so it's absolutely possible.

If you continue you have problems, and you're SE then the concierge should be able to do the check-in for you.

Apparently your message did the trick. I tried to check in (several times) since arriving in YVR, most recently just after posting this thread. But based on your comments, I decided to give it one more try.

Lo and behold, the app let me check in, and I'm now checked in all the way through.

Thanks for that.

Will have a much better flight across the Pacific without this hanging over my head.
