Luggage allowance flying Premium Economy from Melbourne to Vancouver

Hi,

I am flying Premium Economy from Melbourne to Vancouver and have an allowance of 2 x 23kg bags.
Am I allowed to take 1 x 30kg bag instead?

Thanks

Sure, you’ll just have to pay a $100 overweight fee.

So even though I'm allowed to take 46kg, and only take 30kg, I'll be charged $100

You're not allowed 46kg. You're allowed 23kg, twice.

30kg is heavy. It requires special handling. Hence why there's a fee.

Thanks for the response. Looks like I'll be taking 2 bags, giving ground staff extra work.

It's pretty simple.

If i give you a 1000 kg block, and ask you to move it, you can't.

If I give you 100 10 kg blocks and ask you to move the 1000kg, you can do it with ease.

There is a weight above which airlines have decided it's too heavy for a standard employee, and they levy a surcharge.

That weight (mass?) on AC and many other airlines is 23kg.

30kg is a lot to carry.

Do other airlines have similar rules? Or do other airlines allow combined overweight, free of charge, into one bag from two or three bags?

(asking for a friend)

I understand that, but they lift 30kg for someone in business, so they can lift 30kg.

Or they bring over a specially trained person or special equipment to lift overweight luggage?

Hence why they charge for it. Or include it if you have high enough status (where many things are included) or in a high enough cabin (where many things are included).

Business class comes with many perks that PE does not, including the overweight baggage allowance.

I believe this may be an Australian and possibly other places occupational health and safety rule that items over a certain weight have to be lifted by 2 baggage handlers instead of 1

so there is actually a tangible cost involved, at least in Australia

Locally qantas has similar rules for heavy bag charges

quite ancient document talking about this as a policy:

I have had weight "combined" on more than one occasion (Singapore Airlines, Cathay, Air Canada and ANA). None of those airlines were consistent with it though. Depends on how friendly the check in staff are. Also, travelling with children makes them more sympathetic. I usually have a small bag inside my large bag full of the heavy stuff, if they decline, then I take out the smaller heavy bag and check two.

The normal weight actually is 32,kgs for health and safety reasons. Not even first class is supposed to carry any single item more than 32 kgs. It's the combined weight that's more.
