Aeroplan account expiry - do 1000 point donations count as activity?
As title says, we have one account set to expire in a few days that has about 100K points in it... can we gift 1K to one of the charities as a donation and have that count as activity? Website isn't exactly clear.
curious if anyone has done this |

Cheaper to go and buy a pack of screws at Home Hardware maybe?

This is timely, as my spouse got the account expiry email yesterday. Esso was always the go to option, but I guess I will be buying screws this weekend.

I believe these activities can take a while to post is my only concern (assuming the OP has a AP partner close by). Not sure how long it takes on say amazon but Esso points would take “several days” |
got eStore credit for purchase on Amazon.ca in about 5 days
|
I don't have 5 days, I have 3. LOL
|
Do all of the above suggestions, nothing to lose other than 100k if you don't.

or find someone with Amex MR points, give them 20$ to transfer you 1000 points |
I believe ESSO is no longer an Aeroplan option now as they switched to PC Optimum since May?
but donation works if all other options are too tight for deadline |

They sure do. Small purchase made Saturday afternoon, just checked the account this morning and they were posted. Less than 48 hours!
Buy screws to not get screwed. :D |

Thanks for all the suggestions.
We were actually able to sort 2 rewards flights to Jamaica in January from YYC... market rewards for LESS than the fixed rate awards. Looks like AC is trying hard to fill rouge seats so this worked out "ok" for us. Don't like the fact we still have stupid scamcharges but not much we can do there. |

Scam charges for Rouge. Eeeek. Hope it was in J (or whatever Rouge considers up front for that route).
|
Unfortunately it wasn't - that said we got specific flights we wanted which saved us a ton off the regular fares. we are overnighting in YYC so the 4 hour flights are broken up before we get to our villa... :)
Looks like on some routes that AC wants to fill on rouge, they are opening up seat availability on connecting flights (ie, YYC-YYZ) that normally were tough to access.... As far as the "Eww rouge" is concerned... we regularly fly sunwing on winter holidays, and rouge is pretty tolerable considering. I'm sure we will have a few drinks before our flight so we won't even notice. And the fact we won't have kids with us... bingo! |
Keepng Account Active. Donations?
I've not been able to find a clear answer on a question. I want to keep my air miles points from being closed due to inactivity. Aeroplan, Aadvantage, etc. allow donation of points to specific charities through their websites. Is this a means of keeping an account from being deactivated? Is there a minimum number of points?

A little search goes a long way.
https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/air-...-activity.html Welcome to FT. |
Wait, is this a question about Air Miles or Aeroplan?

First, Welcome to FT. Second, the FT search engine is not the most, um, "helpful" one out there. Depending on the keyword(s) one uses, you either get a result, or you get none. I prefer the usual search engines as there seems to be much more intuitive-ness built in when searching for threads on FT. I've posted this suggestion in the past, more than once :D Just a suggestion for anyone who may be driving by this thread. |

Well, the UPS Store might be an option if one can get the credit to post...
|
Went to Home Hardware on Friday. Looked around for the cheapest item to buy (and we can sort of use). At check out, the guy said "got Aeroplan miles expiring?" :D
Miles posted on Saturday. In the mean time, still waiting for the UPS miles from 2 weeks ago.... |
Someone PMed me about what to get at HH. We looked around, the thing that was exact $2 was the small paint roller. There were others I don't remember. We got something a little over that as we could use it. Better than the inflated price for mail supplies at the UPS store whose miles don't post.

it can take 2-3 weeks to post but if you have a smart phone and live in Canada, download www.carrotrewards.ca app. Every 3000 steps = 1 free aeroplan point, scene point or similar. You will earn points without thinking about it.

My last day to clear was 10/18 - just a week ago. And that's also the last time I hit my goal, which increases a few times after an 18 day streak. |
With Carrot, you often get quizzes/surveys which are worth a few points, but also get credit more quickly than you will first signing up for steps. Mine usually post within a couple of days, and even when I don't get the steps every day or every week, it is certainly a good way to keep AP points active if you need it.

Sorry for the late reply. I don't have my AP card with me and just tell them my number. I believe I have entered it myself on the credit card reader.

Hey there,
New to site......didn't know there were so many cool nerds out there discussing mileage. I needed to get some additional miles to make a certain status by the end of December, so i called up AP and the agent told me that it is the transaction date of a purchase that is used. I questioned her with regards to buying from Apple Store through the AP website as it states that it take 6-8 weeks for the points post, and she reiterated that it definitely is the transaction date. Hopefully she is right |
Not only is the Apple Store via Aeroplan estore quite slow to credit, but sometimes it takes a follow-up to make sure it is posted. Certainly is worth doing rather than not getting the miles at all, but is definitely not a way to generate quick miles.
|
"Flyquiet",
In your experience is it all about the transaction date ? So as long as I have the transaction (purchase)initiated before Dec 31stI should be fine....or do you have to have miles shown as a transaction by Dec 1st. ? |
Sorry - the redeemable miles (Aeroplan) mean so little to me that I can barely keep track of making sure they give them to me. There's bound to be others here who can answer the general question (which is vendor-independent). However, if you read another thread, someone had a closed Aeroplan reinstated with all its miles when they found an unclaimed Esso or Home Hardware or something.
