Aeroplan Tightening the Ropes- Options for Not Flying the Last Segment

It seems as if Aeroplan has become more stingy when it comes to MPM and acceptable routings. I am trying to book YYT-YHZ, but there is no availability. However, when I search YYT-YFC, availability appears for YYT-YYR-YHZ-YFC. When I called in, I was told that YYT-YYR-YHZ is above the MPM for YYT-YHZ, yet I distinctly remember seeing it as an option last summer.

Is it acceptable to book YYT-YFC, let the agents in YYT know that I no longer need to travel as far as YFC, and short check my bags to YHZ? Has anyone been reprimanded for something similar?

You could call and ask it be reticketed without the last segment, pay the change fee, and avoid uncertainty on the day of travel.

I asked about doing that but the system wouldn't allow it as it would exceed the MPM for Halifax.
Does AC consider skipping the last leg of a ticketed itinerary a breach of contract?

I'm not aware of any documented instance of Aeroplan taking action against someone for dropping the last segment.

It's possible that you won't be allowed to short-check your bags, though.

When you do this, make sure you, once the ticket is fully dead and has expired, apply for a refund of taxes and surcharges through the AC site.

If you are able to book 'next day first thing out', or a very long connection (ie: 24 hour rule for int'l itineraries), short checking becomes 100% plausible and will not be questioned.

UNLESS he uses the YHZ lounge then cancels/no-shows for the last flight. Then they may care. alot.

Skipping the last leg normally only works well if you only have hand baggage

If you no-show isn't the remaining ticket/applicable taxes forfeited?

Yes! Based on DC's experiences I will be staying far away from the MLL in YHZ.

Nope. The fare for the no-showed segment is, but not certain taxes associated with the forfeited segment.
