AC Seat Selection Cost
My apologies if this has been posted before. I was not able to find anything on it. AC never had this policy where you had to pay in order for advanced seat selection. Apparently starting 2017-04-01, they started charging for passengers to select seats before OLCI opens...

Are you asking about this info posted on Air Canada's site?

Are you on a Air Canada Rouge flight? If yes then they do charge a fee, or else if you flying international you have to pay for preferred seats, such as bulk heads & exit rows. Now, if you pay for the higher fare classes you don't pay.
One more thing. Most seats are free during OLCI. AC is a business and it wants to make money, it does not care about you and me.

Preferred seats always cost money unless status makes you exempt or you buy Lat. Even at OLCI unless you get GTE and risk IDB.
For standard seats, Tango you pay, until t-24. Flex and above is free from booking.
Did this really only start in 2014?
I realize this may be an over simplification and admit to those willing to risk it and check in at t-2h you may get an assigned seat etc... but I wanted to provide a short hopefully reasonable accurate answer to the thread title. This being FT, I thought I better add this disclaimer.
Let the stories begin.
