One thing my daughter recommended when she came back from visiting him last year is to bring money, lots o' money.

I would agree with her assessment of Iceland.

Iceland was expensive. Norway was twice the cost, like the $18 burger king burger, without fries. Oddly Finland (Euros) is again cheaper if you happen to be near the border. |

Also, the place is so trendy with tourists that the government is trying to price them, or tax them, to manageable numbers.

I am interested...especially as there is the chance of meeting the Kit Kat poster!
Depending on the time the location may be immaterial. |

Hotels can be very pricey even in off season because many properties close and there's less inventory available. Prepared food and groceries are expensive because many things are imported and costs for retail businesses are high (wages, rent, heating for 11 months a year). A pizza might cost $50 CAD but the guy who serves it to you can get a free university education, makes a living wage and gets free healthcare (all of it not just hospitals like in Canada). So besides the cost of remoteness, it's a cultural difference. You can also travel very, very cheaply in Iceland hitchhiking and camping if you so desire. It's a stunningly beautiful country but also very compact and accessible compared to the Canadian north. |
I got halfway posting about Iceland's ripoff pricing on everything like the $350+ standard Hilton room rate... and the $14.99us mcdonalds-imposter kids meal before lack of in flight wifi cut me off. The airline food on our WOW $60 yyz-kef flight was actually cheaper and better than what we found downtown.
I see the topic was well covered already :) Maybe we just all give Dorian our credit cards or Aeroplan logins and tell him to book us and surprise us? Secret DO, told to FTers only at check in deadline. |

Location suggestion? HKG or SIN early October would be fantastic. Great weather and amazing food ^
