FlyerTalk Forums Expert How-Tos and Guides
Last edit by: tcook052
This new annual thread has been carved out of the previous thread in an effort to reduce the number of megathreads on the AC forum. For those interested previous versions are the original 2004 - 2014 thread , 2015 edition , and 2016 edition.

The original thread started by accident but quickly became a popular place to come and discuss off topic things such as hockey, new movies, or almost anything that wouldn't fit into existing AC forum threads. More Air Canada or Aeroplan topics such as flight feedback, in-flight services issues or mileage earning/redemption are all topics that should go into existing AC forum threads so others can benefit from this information. Topics about hotels or airlines and/or their loyalty programs or should be posted elsewhere on FT as should topics better suited to other forums such as Travel Products for questions about luggage or Travel Photography for discussion about cameras.

While the conversation is more relaxed as it would be in a lounge that doesn't mean however that the FT rules don't apply her as they definitely do so please refrain from controversial topics such as politics or religion, avoid profanities and treat other lounge patrons with the same respect you expect.

I grab those 24 packs for $3 whenever I'm doing a road trip. Probably not that green but it's soooo easy.

Of course flying isn't exactly green. Nor always easy

There are essentially two kinds of hardware startups:

1. Those run by software people who don't realize the complexity of what they are promising (see: every Kickstarter hardware project). Raises a small amount of money before going bankrupt without producing anything.

2. Those run by MBAs trying to pass off a $5 commodity device with splashy marketing and imitation-Apple industrial design as an innovative growth-stage hardware company. Raises a medium to large amount of money (depending on which frats the founders were in at Yale) before going bankrupt.

Sounds good, you know where to find me. I'm not interested in orgainzing more than a nano-/micro-Do as I'm going to TPE to visit a busy who's not an FTer, but if someone else wants to tag along once we set something, no problem there.

I feel that if @Adam Smith did the maths on this, it would not be 1 billion percent :P.

Whatever floats your boat. Just don't expect me to consult with experienced FTers, book a venue in advance and provide party favours

Yeah, a billion percent is a bit high, but when you look at the criminally low payments that companies like Coke and Nestlé make to governments for the right to extract and bottle water, you might be surprised at how high the real numbers are...

Not at all an industry I have much experience with, but with just a couple minutes of Googling...

At $40 per million litres (per here), as charged by Saskatchewan, if a 500 mL bottle of water sells for $1.70, that means the markup (at retail) is about 8.5 million percent over what they paid the government for the water. In Alberta, we apparently charge nothing, so the markup is infinite...

Of course, there are costs to bottle and transport the water, but the profit margins are still sky-high. A couple of things I read suggested that the profit margins on bottled water are significantly higher than things like Coke and Pepsi.

What's amazing about that is that industries like oil and gas and, to a lesser extent, mining, face constant complaining from the public about the fact that it's the people who are the owners of the resources and they are often supposedly not getting their fare share.

But I don't hear anyone talking about slapping Coca-Cola with a bunch of royalties to give us our "fair share" of the profits from the water they extract for essentially nothing...

Hmmm the more I look at all those TATL Y flights the more anxious I'm getting. I keep forgetting I'm flying 9-10 hours lol. 13/24 WS plus seats already taken and still 3 weeks left until first flight. I'm going to be OLCI for each one right at T-24 and will definitely buy them if available. Same with the AA/BA last minute J upgrades. Theres a decent amount of space for those two.

Just went in and bought exit rows, bulkheads and main cabin + for all the flights just incase plus/J is full at OLCI.

Ive been super cool with the 1-2.5 hour non stop Y flights in Canada/US recently and thought this was some amazing value / self growth but I'm too weak for any long haul Y 😂. I was so proud of buying some insanely cheap Y fares. Sigh...

Ya, there are a lot of companies that do kickstarters etc that never actually make it through and close. I won't buy on kickstarter anymore.
