FlyerTalk Forums Expert How-Tos and Guides
Last edit by: tcook052
This new annual thread has been carved out of the previous thread in an effort to reduce the number of megathreads on the AC forum. For those interested previous versions are the original 2004 - 2014 thread , 2015 edition , and 2016 edition.

The original thread started by accident but quickly became a popular place to come and discuss off topic things such as hockey, new movies, or almost anything that wouldn't fit into existing AC forum threads. More Air Canada or Aeroplan topics such as flight feedback, in-flight services issues or mileage earning/redemption are all topics that should go into existing AC forum threads so others can benefit from this information. Topics about hotels or airlines and/or their loyalty programs or should be posted elsewhere on FT as should topics better suited to other forums such as Travel Products for questions about luggage or Travel Photography for discussion about cameras.

While the conversation is more relaxed as it would be in a lounge that doesn't mean however that the FT rules don't apply her as they definitely do so please refrain from controversial topics such as politics or religion, avoid profanities and treat other lounge patrons with the same respect you expect.

Yes, shopping for pants as a tall guy who wasn't a beanpole was never fun. I found there also tended to be plenty of pants for short, fat guys.

do any of you keep your University/college notes? Why do you or don't you?
I used to keep them, just in case... But I started throwing them out a few years after university since I was never using them. When I occasionally do need to reach back to something, I can generally find the answer on the Internet pretty easily.

The only thing I have left now is stuff from language courses in case I need to brush up on my Italian, German or Spanish, since it's harder to find good language instruction for free online than to find something like basic economics or finance information.

I do still have my CFA textbooks, but I'm thinking it might be time to start getting rid of those too. Thankfully I keep them at the office, so they're not wasting precious space at home.

I did not keep many notes, but I did keep nearly all technical work.

Especially stuff that had clever techniques/manipulations that I wouldn't be able to find online.

Like ways to eliminate loops for code efficiency, or how to deal with some multidimensional matrices.

Not that it'll necessarily be used, but when you havent done it in a while, it's nice to have a fully built example.

(For those curious, matlab for loops are just horrible. Though I think the latest updates have significantly increased the speed. Still doesn't compete with matrix form though.)

But at that point, I guess it's no different than just keeping work for reuse at later time. Just happens some of it is school work.

I guess we're paying for a balmy first half of Dec. as Environment Canada has issued an extreme cold warning as with wind chill mercury dropping to minus 43 tonight. Going to stay this cold until Sun. when the thaw comes but can't come fast enough.

All my notes were handwritten (I literally transcribed powerpoints by hand during lecture). I brought some of my notes and textbooks down to SF with me, mainly as refresher for interview prep as a new grad, so notes + textbooks for stuff like data structures, algorithms, discrete math. I had a second year course that did C and shell scripting, so I brought that down too. Everything else I left back in Canada .... until this summer when Mom renovated the entire basement so I threw everything out -- notebooks as well as mint-condition textbooks (given a new edition every year, my textbooks are like 10 editions out of date and forgot for some reason or another, they aren't donate-able to the Toronto Pubic Library either)

I still keep the notes around though -- saved me a.ss 4 years ago when I was interviewing for my current position. They're also useful for me to pull out questions to torture interview aspiring interns/new grads with bwahaha
