Thumbs up Can I stop for a break when coming back from Hawaii?

Sorry if this has been discussed but couldn’t find the topic when I searched.

I am wanting to redeem to Hawaii (prefer KOA) but I don't want to do an overnight to the west coast then do another long flight all in coach back home to YYZ.

Does anyone have experience of AP letting you plan a stopover (maybe in SFO YVR or LAX?) for a night to rem rest without paying more or using more points?

Cheers ahead of time

Yes that would be a valid multi-city routing with a stopover and is allowed. You can build your trip on AE.com (use multi-city) to save the booking fee.

Google is your friend:

28.2. Between Canada/Cont. USA and Hawaii/Puerto Rico/Mexico/Central America/Caribbean:

28.2.1. Rule for rewards containing only Air Canada flight: Two stopovers are permitted in addition to the point of turnaround. One open jaw is permitted in lieu of one stopover.

28.2.2. Rule for rewards containing a minimum of one flight on a Star Alliance partner other than Air Canada: One stopover is permitted in addition to the point of turnaround. One open jaw is permitted in addition to the one stopover.
2 stops if you fly via YVR on AC or 1 if involving UA via SFO/LAX

YVR-KOA on AP?

Yes, but is this a good use of AP points?

I had a quick look @ availability. Lots of classic rewards @ 45K. The revenue ticket costs $400 so that means you value AP miles at less than 1 cent/per i.e. 400/45000. Even at 25K it may not be a good use of AP miles i.e. 400/25000 = 1.6 cents (I value mine at 3 cents).

Note the revenue tix. is not a bad MR (= 6.3 cpm).

Not sure there are any programs that will credit full miles anymore.

I redeemed for 2 stopovers and an open-jaw, in Jan 2013 for travel in May 2013. I mentioned it here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/20177921-post7.html

I'll re-hash the relevant stuff:

Required 45,000 AeroPesos + $150 scamcharges, redeemed early Jan 2013.
I got BOTH an Open Jaw AND an extra Stopover (so 2 SO's).

YYZ - LIH (on UA metal, via DEN) 1 week stopover
= Open Jaw here, I will go from LIH to HNL on my own =
HNL - LAX (on UA metal) 1 week stopover
LAX - YYZ (on AC metal)*

* On my final leg, a 1-stop UA option was available, but I chose non-stop AC + additional $30 scamcharges)
- 3 of 4 phone-in agents confirmed my booking was valid, though others have posted to say that the T&C defined my booking as INVALID
I found out later that rule 28.2.2 (posted above by hearna) should have made this an ineligible booking, as I had 2 legs on UA, not all on AC metal. So, it should only have allowed 1 stopover and 1 OJ. Ergo, YMMV.

Wow JJONAHJ that is what I am hoping g to do but I don't really need the open jaw. I want to stop over in SEA (or yvr, pdx) for a week and then stop over on the west coast somewhere. Maybe if I call in they will issue it but it may look like I will have to choose only one stopover.

Not sure why you're pulling YVR into the analysis, as corruptcanadian says YYZ is the origin.

Anyway, total taxes for my redemption above was was $130 because it was mostly UA flights (no/low scam fees). I had to locate the Blue Saver UA award flights on my own, at the UA site, since Aeroplan.com kept trying to coerce me into flying on AC metal only.

I priced up our itinerary at Expedia.ca, and the fare would have been $1200. So, including spending $30 for the phone-in booking fee, I still saved $1040, meaning the 45K worked out to 2.3 cpm. Not super great, but with all the practically FREE Aeros raining down on us these days, it's a WIN in my books.

Booking Biz J fare would've bumped up the cpm, but we didn't have the Mega Aeros that we have now, after the torrential downpour of points since that early 2013 booking.

CC, if I read your situation correctly, you want something like

YYZ-YVR stop
YVR-KOA stop/POT
KOA-YVR stop
YVR-YYZ

I forget, but are you not allowed to stop at the same destination on either side of your POT (Pseudo Nim knowledge needed here)? If yes, then you should be able to book all AC metal, and thus meet the 2 stopovers + POT rule. Assuming the higher scam blow isn't too powerful on your wallet. Else, I'd try to find an itinerary that includes SEA/PDX with UA in the mix, and call in and see if you can get it validated anyway. It' be worth the $30+tax phone-in booking fee.

Yes, like that routing (anywhere on the west)...I am just dreading coming back to YYZ from Hawaii all frazzled on overnight flights and it ruining my relaxed zen..haha. The point of going to Hawaii is to relax but I think a stop on the west coast to chill on the way back would be ideal, but if I must, I must. Otherwise, I will have to see about mixing up the rewards and use points on another airline from the west. The point of stopping on the way there is to visit family.
