You were lucky. There was Glitch.
LHR & SYD are my destinations.
With the introduction of E-Credits, if AC 33 is not booked as a through flight you have to wait for the window to open for each segment.
There no ifs & buts about it.
No way can you upgrade YYZ-YVR
YVR-SYD when only the window for YYZ-YVR opens up.
Even Concierges cannot do it.
Many a times I am travelling when my AC 33 YYZ-YVR & YVR-SYD window open up.
YVR concierges do upgrade requests for me & they have to wait for each segment window to open up.
If they cannot do it, you cannot.
I have doing this route several times a year for the past decade.
How many times a year do you do this route & for how many years have you been doing it?

No, I will not give in - not without a fight. A revised protocol should not disadvantage YYZ pax. I will campaign to have the window open for the YVR - SYD leg at Toronto departure time for all pax traveling that route.

Sorry for not being clear. I had indeed booked AC33 YYZ-SYD as a direct / through flight (which is why I put YVR in brackets in my original post; if I had booked both segments separately I would have written "YYZ-YVR-SYD")

the reason this really amuses me is that most upgrades for YVR-SYD clear the day of travel, very very very very few clear at 7 days out, and so it's a pointless fight.

But who in their right mind would NOT book YYZ-SYD as a through flight? If nothing else it would likely be a lot more expensive to book YYZ-YVR, and YVR-SYD on separate tickets.

This happens because both segments can be booked separately, but only show up as one flight on the eUp site.

This happened to me when flying AC007 winter schedule, which is very similar in the way its handled to 33 but goes to HKG.
I cannot speak for AC007.
For AC 33 & 34 I can .
If you are booked as follows:
YYZ-SYD AC 33, you can upgrade when the window opens as SE 7 days prior @ 8:30PM or around that time. If no R, it will go on WL.
If it goes to Gate, AC 33 through flight gets priority.
Meaning, if the sector between YYZ-YVR no J, only YVR-SYD.
You will get BPs YYZ-SYD as Y.
When you arrive in YVR. The gate Agent will hand you your Upgraded YVR-SYD sector. If you are SE the Concierge working the flight will hand you the upgraded sector.
PAX boarding in YYZ on a through flight even E35 trumps a SE boarding in YVR even if that SE is on a full Y , YVR-SYD.
There is no way around it.
I always book AC 33 as a through flight.

SYD-YYZ AC 34. You can request upgrade when the window opens up. The time is same for SYD-YYZ or SYD-YVR.
In the years I have been doing this flight, I have never seen SYD-YVR have R @ 7 day window without SYD-YYZ having it.
Now if it goes to the Gate.
And there are seats only SYD-YVR, Paxs on Through flight AC 34 get Piority, Including E35 going to YYZ over SE going to YVR.
Again. SYD-YVR will be in J & YVR-YYZ Y.
This has happen to me more times than I can remember.
The SYD Concierge puts me on YVR-YYZ on WL . 9 out of 10, when I land in YVR, YVR concierges meets me and hands me the J BP for YVR-YYZ.

Crazy Mileage Junkies. Actually you can book it as 2 segments without the fare going up. You will get extra 1000 miles I think.

The fight is not pointless. Fairness is never pointless. Well, I will write AC tomorrow and post the answer (with permission) when I get it.

Flight Mileage Calc says: YYZ-SYD = 9660 miles; whereas YYZ-YVR-SYD = 9840, so only ~ 200 more miles it seems, but still you'd really have to be crazy to book separately.

You need to read more carefully. Of course one would book YYZ-SYD as a through flight if one's going from YYZ to SYD. And of course an upgrade on that through flight should stand for the whole flight, i.e. from YYZ to SYD.

i seem to recall a FTer doing exactly that hoping for more miles only to find out that AC only credits miles for YYZ-SYD even when the pax books AC33 YYZ-YVR and AC33 YVR-SYD as two separate segments. No personal experienc myself and my memory could be faulty, so dont quote me on that one.

AC makes the rules. We play the game. As long as we don't break the rules, anything is fair.

If you travel in J, you can claim the 50% COS bonus for YYZ to YVR and 25% from YVR to SYD instead of 25% from YYZ to SYD. It makes a little bit more of a difference then.

I read it carefully. If it is the same plane you and I irrespective of where we board it should have the same chance to upgrade if status and fare class are the same. Hope you read this carefully.
