Rule for rebooking a cancelled code share flight?

Lets say you have two flights on AC ticket stock but the 2nd one is on other metal, but an AC flight number/codeshare.

Lets then say the 2nd flight gets cancelled, before the first flight even departs. Who is responsible for taking care of getting the PAX to the destination. AC or the 2nd airline? Which airline takes the lead?

(If it matters, assume it is a J revenue ticket and if it matters further, PAX in S100K).
