Upgrade priority?

Can someone tell me how it works? If I have an J class ticket (paid the J class points), but one segment is in Y, I can request an upgrade at the gate, but where would I fall on the list? At the bottom? I do not have status.....

I am assuming that you are on an Aeroplan ticket? If that is the case then you will be dead last in the upgrade priority.

What you can do though is keep an eye on that route to see if an award spot opens up on that leg. If it does you can call Aeroplan and ask them to bump you into J (without being charged a fee either though some agents may try to ding you).

Best of luck.

Thanks for that tip! I have registered on Expert Flyer and have already been alerted to a J class seat on long haul opening up! (I hadn't booked yet). I do see a great seat sale for J class to Europe, so may just do a one way. With the amount of fees they are charging these days for AE tickets, I will save $400 in fees to put towards a $1300 confirmed J class. So really, J class one way from YYG-Venice will cost me $900. Not bad!

The change fee is waived but you'll likely have the taxes and scamcharges recalculated and will need to pay the difference from when you booked.
