eUpgrades and empty exec cabin

Flying SFO - YVR right now. Waitlisted for an upgrade 7 days ago, but wasn't expecting it because flight was zero across the board.

Asked at the gate about my upgrade, and was told everything was full.

Boarding is now complete, and there are empty seats in both exec and economy cabins. Blargh.

Oh talk to the SD - if there is truly an empty seat in J then you should be upgraded (unless seat is broken etc.)

I was reading of a similar story on Twitter, and I read the following, which I believe is the reason:

If only AC had told me that... I would just buy their damn sandwich, but I still want my J seat.

It can happen that VIP purchase the entire front cabin to avoid mingling with the common folk. If someone paid to have a seat in J fly empty, then AC won't upgrade you into it.

Yea, it was either that, or last minute no-shows due to mis-connects. I know I gave up my place on the upgrade list as soon as I boarded. And this flight being on an E190, definitely needed to board first to get overhead bin space!

Oh well. Just needed to vent...

I know I've posted the stories in here before ... but I've had an eUp not clear and then seen empty seats in J and approached the SD and they've reseated me in to J. Has happened at least twice on TATL flights now.

Did they take the eUp credits out or did it end up being a comp upgrade

In once instance it was comped. The SD recognized me from the inbound a couple of days earlier and was super nice

I shared a post here a few months ago where on an almost empty plane I saw non status & Cons being seated in J and asked why SE were not moved up. I was moved up and it was comp

Just have to be vigilant and ask. After all we pay extra to gain status for these perks

You don't necessarily give up your upgrade when you board. I have been seated twice where the GA ended up coming on board and letting me know that my upgrade cleared when boarding was almost finished.
