Third party liability from the rental car company in the US is a joke and should never be relied on! You might get as little as $10k in coverage. Imagine injuring a van of doctors! You need to buy the liability insurance supplement or LIS in the US if you do not have your own auto policy that covers you. In Canada you are safe as rentals include generous liability coverage.
