It's a well known psychological technique to create "dependency". Something about randomly rewarding someone to stimulate addictive behaviour. It's the same as lottery or casino games. It's quite underhanded, and indeed insidious, if that's what they are doing.

http://www.rohitbhargava.com/2011/09...y-with-it.html (this makes the case of using such tactics in marketing)

I found an article about using such technique in managing classroom behaviour:
http://www.calstatela.edu/faculty/js...sicRewards.htm

We really should NOT feel special about AP pulling s..t like this on us. It's quite outrageous, in fact. I do NOT wish to have Aeroplan/Aircanada involved in manipulating my dopamine levels. Thanks but NO THANKS.

EDIT: Isn't this tantamount to an illegal lottery? Randomly dropping rewards without notice to customers? Any lawyers here that would know?

"
4.1 The Criminal Code

In relation to lotteries and games of chance, the Criminal Code states:

206. (1) Every one is guilty of an indictable offence and liable to imprisonment for a term not exceeding two years who (…)
(f) disposes of any goods, wares or merchandise by any game of chance or any game of mixed chance and skill in which the contestant or competitor pays money or other valuable consideration; (…)

In effect this section prohibits a requirement that a product or service be purchased as the sole condition of contest participation. Where other means of entry are available, such as using a "reasonable hand-drawn facsimile" or obtaining entry forms by means other than making a purchase, illegal contests under paragraph 206(1)(f) are avoided since the purchase requirement has been removed."

Perhaps the only remedy now is for AP to drop 10,000 points into EVERYONE's account, whether or not they purchased, acquired, or redeemed points at all.

Not sure if you meant miles from all sources, if thats the case. I had 87,000 in the first 6 months and no bonus for me.

I had 5 segments in the first two months on AC metal.

Seriously, you want to punish AE for giving out rewards without checking with you first?
How jaded do you have to be to think like that?

(FWIW, I got the 10K.)

I got it. I have no status, had 0 revenue segments in the last few years. Did accumulate over 50k points this year.

1st thing I googled after reading this thread was "aeroplan class action". Don't think there is a recently settled case.

I definitely accumulated 50,000 AP miles in the first 6 months of the year, but I don't recall taking that many AC flights.

***EDIT *** Bottom line, this does not appear to be an error.

***EDIT #2*** I looked in my account and I actually had zero AC flights in January and February -- so, using the information I received from AP -- it appears that if you earned 50,000 or more points in the first half of the year, you got this bonus. I accumulated over 100,000 points during this time. Perhaps those that have posted to have received the bonus should indicate the number of points you accumulated in the first 6 months of the year.
You must also have redeemed a flight during this period in addition to accruing points. In other words, both "earned" and "spent" to qualify.

Those who know the right person(s) at Aeroplan would have known about this promotion to maximize the benefits. Those who do not, sorry, too bad.

This promotion was never publicly announced.

No, I did not redeem anything in 2012, not a single mile spent.
No, I do not credit flying to Aeroplan, and avoid AC in general.

but yes, I did get 50k during the first 6 months thru credit card sign up (Aerogold) and transfers from Aventura during bonus periods, and of course that silly Stars 16k promo.

MILES ACCUMULATED WITH ALL PARTNERS BETWEEN Jan 01, 2012 TO Jun 30, 2012: 51,471 MILES

I did not see any points rebated into my account as of this morning.

Who do I have to know to get it?

I tried to search the Aeroplan web site but could find any news release on this.
You have to call the YYZ concierges.

Nothing for me. And yet:

MILES ACCUMULATED WITH ALL PARTNERS BETWEEN Jan 01, 2012 TO Jun 30, 2012: 232,197

Of that total, 25,117 is from flying. So once again, this seems to be a bit of randomness from AC / AE.

Another date point:

MILES ACCUMULATED WITH ALL PARTNERS BETWEEN Jan 01, 2012 TO Jun 30, 2012 : 55,417 MILES

For Jan-Feb, 6 AC segments and another 2 on QK for a total of 20,178 status miles.

I also redeemed for a short haul flight (15,000 miles) on Jan 18.

Sadly, no 10k bonus has been posted to my account.
