Thanks for the suggestions. It looks like I'll be flying AC into LHR on an award ticket, and BA will fly me directly into Faro and back from Lisbon for only C$418.40. I don't like the idea of 31" seat pitch going south (described by GB Airways as "generous -- up to 4" more than charters" yikes!). I should be able to tolerate it for 3 hours. Depends how full the flight is.
It's a really long connection going to Portugal (arrive LHR 7:05am, leave 4:05pm) but at least I have arrivals-lounge access, or I could go into London for a couple of hours I suppose.
