upgrades...

upgrades...
Returned from a vacation. I read some of the prior posts about upgrades with interest. I just took my family (wife, two young boys) down east....travelled on L tickets. Managed to get upgraded (all 4 of us!) both there and back.
How? First, using PTO, I knew they were full in the back and empty in the front. Second, I got to the gate 1 1/2 hrs. early, and I was the first one there when the gate agent set up. Third, I was very polite and nice...not demanding! Fourth, I suggested that "I know you are full in the back; as you are dealing with things, we'll try to help!" with a smile, giving them my SE card.
Then I disappeared...and never bothered them again.
The thing I've learned is that these people are harried, frenzied, and they don't want to be bothered by you sitting around demanding something....
So the key I think is to be nice, watch the loads, and disappear!
