Doesn't do anything actually. You can basically consider that your nominees are always in a deactivated state unless you request an upgrade for them. If you use this deactivate function, it just adds an extra step of clicking a button to reactivate them if you wish to upgrade that person. No useful purpose at all except to confuse people.

Do you mean that if you don't deactivate your nominees by the end of the year they will be automatically renewed and you won't be able to change those nominees for the next year?

Hmm if that's true this most useless function has all of a sudden become a most essential function!

Yes, now I agree, it just became very useful. Thanks for this information Andrew.
I think the website needs to be updated so this is more clear because nobody understands it. Here is what it says now.
Validity of your list of eUpgrade Nominees
Your list of eUpgrade Nominees will be valid until February 29, 2012 (inclusively), which marks the end of the 2011 Top Tier benefit year.
Actually, your list of eUpgrade Nominees will be valid forever (or until you lose your status or on March 1 only if they are deactivated).
So what happens if you drop in status and you don't get as many nominees. Will the system automatically choose which ones to keep?

hope AC informs everyone of this when they outline the 2012 program, i think most assumed you need to do the nominees again

sorry to bring back this topic... Can someone make it more clear what happens in March if one forgets to 'deactivate' nominees? Will it automagically roll over to new year?
--> Added: Re-read AY's respond... seems like it WILL automagically roll over. Time to remind all FTers to clean up their nominees list...
Also it is a valid question, what if a SE become E, the system will just keep the first 2? Assume it does roll over unless one goes in manually deactivate nominees...
IMHO, the system should wipe the nominees list and have a fresh start.

There's an interesting angle here that raises lots more questions. Right now I can make, for example, eUpgrade requests for Mrs. TD into the 2012 year using recently acquired credits that expire Feb 2013. What if I want to change nominees for next year? Do my requests for Mrs. TD disappear? When can I add my new nominees? Can I wait until I get my 2012 credits, make eUpgrade requests for my old nominees, then deactivate them and add new nominees?
The way I suspect it will work is that there will be a window during which we'll be able to deactivate last year's nominees and add new ones. It won't be possible to deactivate anyone for whom there is an outstanding eUpgrade request for a flight after Feb 2012. But that's just my guess.

Can an SE deactivate nominee and change name to include middle name?
I recently attempted to share an e-Upgrade with a fellow traveller for which I have upgraded previously. On a current trip he was asked to use his middle name. Now the computer states that he is not listed as my nominee. A call to the priority line resulted in a statement that nominees names have to be exact to the booking reference or ticket and cannot be changed. A person that has status can have variables of his name as well as travelling companion if using his own eUpgrades since the Aeroplan number is used and not the specific name. I was told that I would not be able to upgrade my nominee due to the addition of the middle name to his ticket. No other solutions were offered.
If I de-activate this name can I amend the name with the middle name inserted and then re-activate with the same cross reference of first and last name and aeroplan number?
Anyone else with a similar situation or solution?

My (current) list in the eUpgrade app is annotated by AC with the notice "This list of eUpgrade Nominees can be used for upgrade requests made until February 29, 2012 inclusively."
Nothing antwhere about it rolling-over. Also, this would not be internally coherent with the other rules about nominees.
TIA

Funny, I PM'ed AY and received this response:
"Hi, the list will refresh on Mar 1 which means it will be blank and one needs to be re-entered. It was mainly done to prevent the surprise element that you had mentioned above.
Let me know if any additional questions.
Andrew"
I guess rules have changed...

I'm glad this thread was bumped, now I can see AY's original reply to this same question a while back.
Time for another PM, methinks.
