Hi CGMWW.
Unfortunately, it is not possible to upgrade using points on AC, mainly because (I think) the certificates upgrades are so generous.
The only way to upgrade would be to use your systemwide upgrades by buying a Y/M fare which costs a lot, but a lot less than a normal J.
Hope this helps.

It's a good and bad thing if we are talking about upgrading using points... It ensures the more loyal you be to AC, the better opportunity you have to get an upgrade. It guarantees that (well.. in most cases) the only people getting a "freebie" upgrade are the top FFs. I do not have a problem with this at all...
CGMWW (Isn't this the reg number of the CP 744 tail # 881?) I am very shock to hear you say that CP does not have a projector screens in Y.. this does not seem true and possible, I've been on them numerous times but in J, however, the last time that I flew CP 747 in Y class I remember they had projector screens for movies and stuff... or did I just misunderstand your question?
BTW, recently saw CP's 747 painted in the AC/CP colour, It is really aweful compared to the proud wings colours... It's very plain for such a big bird!

Empress and Co.,
Thanks for your response. Also, when I flew CGMWW and CFCRA (reg ?) last week i sat in the first cabin of Economy and they only had a tiny little television hidden above the lavatory door. It was very hard to see. I flew on other 744's that had a main BIG projector in the middle section, by this I mean the "overhead". Just wonderin'..hehe...

I also have posted about this same subject, and wish it was possible to do this.
Upgrades seem to be a touchy subject on this board, as some fly so much in the higher fares and seem to always get upgrades.
Others like myself fly a lot and sometime see empty J Class seats with no possibility of an upgrade due to the fare we have!

I, too, would like to see the possibility of upgrades using miles. It's the best of both worlds in a way. The miles you earn (very slowly in my case
) can be used as an "award". You earn miles based on your economy fare but get the upgrade award too.

Generally I'm pretty happy with the upgrade rules -- with one BIG exception. I'm generally happy because I almost always fly on unrestricted fares. It's unusual for me to fly the same itinerary originally booked.
The only restricted tickets I ever buy are websavers. These are so cheap that there's not much to lose by throwing them away in the event of cancellation.
However, a couple of times I've been denied upgrades on websavers. I understand the rules completely, but I fail to see the sense in AC denying at-the-gate, standby upgrades to its best customers. For me, this policy cancels much of the goodwill that AC has built by its otherwise good customer treatment. For me, this policy makes the difference between being totally loyal and constantly considering a defection to another carrier.

I didn't fly CP trans-Pacific much between 1990 and 1996. When did the 747-400s come into service? The last time I flew a CP 747 before those came into service was prior to 1988 (using -200s that did YVR-NRT-HKG and before CP traded the 747-200s to PIA for their DC-10s). Those 742s had 12 F seats up in the top with some 7 or so rows of C/J seats in the first section (forward of door 1).
I had thought CP dropped F in the very early '90s?

When CP first introduced the 747-400 into their fleet...
This is what it said:
"Our first class offers 16 seats with a 64" pitch in a 2x2 configuration. Our Business class is located on both the upper and lower levels. These 60 seats have a 45" pitch. The upper level is in a 2x2 configuration while the lower cabin is 2x3x2. Out Canadian Class cabin features 316 seats with a 34" pitch in a 3x4x3 configuration.

CP dropped F in 1995. They lobbied the Canadian government to hold back AC's privileges to HKG, to that their old J class wouldn't have to go head to head with AC's Executive First. Once Club Empress was ready to roll, CP dropped F, and AC got into HKG.
