Thanks for the advice. For the dates in question there aren't really any lower economy fare buckets left (but business seems to be wide open, so hopefully upgrades will be plentiful). The lower half of the T+ buckets appear to be zeroed out. Because of this it only costs about $50 more to fly via FRA; the only difference on the through fare is due to LH fuel surcharge and German fees. I'm leaning on going through LHR as the going DUB-FRA gives either a very tight or very long connection.
I'm reluctant to book separate tickets for the reasons you state. I had problems with Aer Lingus the last time I flew with them, and would like to give BD a try (plus I want to check out the lounge in DUB and get my tier bonus miles). If I was going to fly EI it would have been more convenient for me to fly out of ORK.
Thanks for the information. I think I'll either take the non-stop or connect via YYZ. Price will be a deciding factor. Both options get me home about the same time as there is a 5+ hour connection to the YEG non-stop flight. If the volcano is still erupting it might be a safer bet to take the YEG flight due to the more northerly routing.
I guess the thing I still need advice on is the date. Which day of the week will likely be more difficult to upgrade on, Sunday or Monday?
Recently I've been buying tickets from LHR and buying separate tickets from DUB-LHR. This has the downside of leaving me unprotected in case of volcano or other delays but gives me the option of picking Aer Lingus flights which are much more frequent than the BD flights and usually cheaper as well.
No experience going to YEG. From my limited experience the flight to YUL often have more R space than the flights to YYZ though. Of the flights to YYZ the 8:30am flight seems to have more R space than the later ones, but there's no flight from DUB that can make that connection.

Well it varies from week to week it seems. But Friday was the only day this week that seemed to have limited R space this week. It did clear 2 1/2 days out though so even that isn't bad. By extrapolation I would guess Saturday/Sunday are the easiest and Monday and Friday are the hardest? But that's just a guess.
