Help understanding availability/upgrades?

I'm booked on AC856 on Tuesday. Promptly at midnight, I called in and added my name to the upgrade waitlist, but I'm a little confused as to my chances.

Here's the report from the Amex ITN tool for this flight:

Cabin class: J9 C9 Z8 Y9 M9 U9 B9 H9 V9 Q9 L9 A9 K9 N9 G1 R0

Obviously there are no R seats left, but with the J9, my understanding is that there are still 9 unassigned seats in J. Am I reading that correctly? If that is the case, is there any chance of having the extra J seats available for upgrades at the gate, or does this just mean there are 9 seats that aren't assigned to someone?

I've already confirmed upgrades for the other two segments of my flight (figured why not, the certs expire in February anyway and I'll get two more before the end of the year thanks to requalifying), but would dearly love the extra space for the overnight to LHR!

Here's how to read it :

J9 means there are still, at a minimum, 9 unsold seats in the J cabin. Out of those 9 seats, they are willing to sell 8 (Z=8) at the discounted business class.
Looking at available booking classes has nothing to do with assigned seats.

Based on these numbers I would "guesstimate" there are probably over 15 seats left in J right now.

Not bad. I guess I'll just have to try my luck on the waiting list with the rest of the peons and hope for the best With 15 seats available, here's hoping I get on! Maybe if I bring a box of thin mints I'll get priority

Update: Got to the airport this morning, and found that my upgrade had cleared for the whole trip, including the overnight to LHR! Fare bucket B, SSWU going YOW->YUL->YYZ->LHR->EDI, J class the whole way. And it gives me enough segments to tip me over into Elite for 2010.

I'm one happy AE member right now. Wish me luck on my return trip upgrade

Excellent news! I assume you didn't bring the thin mints?

Curious as to how you got upgraded J LHR - EDI as I have to head there next month... I thought SSWU were only valid on AC metal and presumably that leg was on BMI... ?

Cheers and good luck on your return leg.
