A330/A340 differences
There was some discussion on another thread about A330s and A340s. There are actually less seats on AC's A330s than its A340s.
The latest timetable (just out) shows 228 economy and 44 Executive Class on A330 vs. 252 economy and 32 Executive Class on A340.
The configuration is 2 2 2 in the Executive Cabin on both, with only 5 rows along the windows and a sixth in the centre on A340 and the same configuration on the A330 but with an additional two full rows behind the entrance doors (rows 7 and 8). This reduces the forward economy cabin to rows 12 to 25 (25 being a partial row because of toilets in the centre) on the A330 compared with rows 12 to 28 (28 being a partial row) on the A340.
I am not sure what (if any) other advantages the A330 has but as KenHamer says, it is basically the same as an A340.

Both A330 and 340-300 share the same fuselage. The engine selection is likely to be the same.
Both Executive First and Economy class will feature the new seats with headrests... The audio-video system is the latest... For Y class, there is no PTV still but there will be bigger screens for movie viewing. For C class, it will have the latest seat with adjustable headrest and more electronic controls and adjustable personal lights. The audio-video system is bought from SONY. The system is called Passport and features the AVOD (audio-video on demand). Some A340s (Fleet no. 909 and 910) already got the new J class seats and AVOD system. The PTV screen is larger... I flew one of these new A340s in June, but the AVOD system is not installed back then yet. Fortunately, it is just YYZ-YVR and I slept all the way.

The engines are indeed quite different. The A330 (2 engines) is available with several different engine options, but typical power is about 67,500 pounds thrust each, for a total of 135,000 total pounds thrust.
The A340 (4 engines) is currently available with only one engine option, with 22,000 pounds thrust each, for a total of 88,000 pounds thrust.
You may have noticed that the A330 generates about 50% more thrust than the longer range A340. This is because commercial aircraft are designed to operate safely with a single engine failure. You'll notice that if the 2 engine A330 loses one engine, the remaining single engine will produce 67,500 pounds of thrust. Similarly, if the 4 engine A340 loses a single engine, the remaining 3 engines will produce 66,000 pounds of thrust, virtually the same as the 67,500 pounds on the A330.
