Finding flts from US -JNB
I'm trying to plan trip to JNB myself and reading all this is very helpful. Does anyone have any useful tips on how to use miles from East coast to Jnb without going thru Europe? Having no luck finding the nonstop flts out of JFk or even Iad for may 2017. ?? What is best way to search for availability using Star Alliance?

Award inventory starts loading at 330 days out which it looks you're a bit outside. Setting up an Expert Flyer alert would be a good idea. The nonstops will be difficult and avoiding Europe will be even more difficult.
As there is no such thing as Star Alliance points and each program has different rules and redemption points which airline do you have these points with?

Sorry points are with Chase, Marriott rewards which both transfer to United- thus Star Alliance. We have lots of points thru united. Is there a specific way to tell if calendar open yet? I can see last week in May is still blacked out but when I go into earlier part of May brings up some availability but not all. Thanks

You're searching at the far reaches of when airlines are willing to presell a ticket for. You'll just have to keep looking or use something like Expert Flyer to get alerts to availability. Some partner awards take extra time to load in after United starts to offer tickets do you might have to wait an extra week or two even after the 330 days.

I recently had luck using United miles for an award booking on ET to South Africa, connecting in ADD.
As someone else suggested, I originally set up an alert on Expert Flyer. Eventually, I cancelled the EF alert and simply checked availability on united.com myself, usually daily. I started searching about 7 months out. I am originating at LAX, but I believe I've seen ET flights from IAD.
