What is the best way to go? Is ground transportation advisable as far as scenery or price?

Do you want to get there fast or not? A bus will take a very long time (around 14 hours) via Arusha and Moshi, you won't see all that much, and could be hot and dusty and/or sticky and rainy. Plus, the Ubungo bus terminal in Dar is a complete madhouse and definitely not for inexperienced African travelers, especially with all the highway construction going on in the immediate vicinity. If determined to do this trip by bus, find one that will drop you somewhere else.

NBO -> DAR one way flights can cost as little as $225.
