Aegean/Etihad Code Share

Hi was just wondering about this is context to Miles and Bonus mile and tier earn. My other half is A3 silver presently and looking at A3 they code share from Australia to Europe. When looking at booking with A3 say BNE/MEL/SYD to a number of hubs in Europe comes up with a A3 flight number even though completed with Etihad. Guess my question is do these flights/sectors accumulate A3 miles/tier?

No, you have to fly on *A metal. Code shares don't count for tier miles (nor as segments in case your other half wants to get the A3 ones).

Award miles and tier miles are only earned on Star Alliance operated flights. So a flight with an A3 flight number, but operated by Etihad, would not earn miles.

I found this out the hard way last year. You will earn zilch in Miles and Bonus for flights on Etihad even with an A3 flightcode.

However, you can claim the miles for the Etihad-operated flights in EY's Etihad Guest programme.

The strange thing is that you will earn miles in EY's program with the A3 codeshare.

It was! Would have been my 4 A3 sectors and my Gold retained in a single trip if only those A3-on-EY flights counted....

But it just gave me another reason to visit Athens later in the year. So no major harm done!

I guess it depends what you are used to. I know now that it's the "norm" in Star Alliance not to earn if the operating carrier isn't also Star, but in the other alliances, and in the non-aligned world, it is STRANGE to have your flightcode on ANY flight which ends up not earning in the programme of the codesharing partner.

But EY is strange in a slightly different way.

I have noticed now, having taken codeshares of several airlines on EY metal, that EY often disregards the booked flightcode and credits the miles as if it was booked on the EY native flightcode if you credit to Etihad Guest.

Here's how the A3 codeshares eventually posted in my Etihad Guest account (as EY "W"), and how the e-ticket was issued by Aegean (as A3 "Z").
