Fare code ambiguity

Hi all,

I recently flew ARN-FRA-LHR on with LH an itin booked via priceline whose website does not indicate the fare class when you book, only class of service.

My boarding card reads under CLASS: "M w"
(Large bold letter "M" and a smaller non-bold letter W)

I asked the agent what it means when my fare class is listed as "M w" and he said my fare class was M and that w was only used in case of re-booking, changes etc which I did not really care about.

Now, Europe crossborder in M gives 1000 miles, whereas in W it gives 500 miles. I received 500. Can that really be correct?

Many thanks for any input.
S.

On an LH ticket, the "M" is the generic code for economy ("Minderzhler" is said over in the M&M forum). Your booking class is W.

That is always what it says on SAS economy tickets. For example "Mv"

The class on which your fare conditions are based (eg rebooking or changes) is exactly what is used for mileage calculation. This is your fare-class. The M class is your cabin-class. (Other airlines often use Y for this)

So yes, unfortunately for you in this case, the miles that you received are correct..

As others have stated, the big "M" on a Lufthansa boarding pass means only that you are seated in economy. It is not necessarily the economy fare class that you hold!

Its purpose is solely to allow any staff to easily recognise which cabin you should be travelling in.

The actual class of travel is indicated elsewhere on the boarding pass in normal font - respectively Q, U, U and X in these examples:
