Accor Experience?

I'm quite reluctant to join any loyalty program where the first step of showing my loyalty is handing over cash to show them that I want to be loyal to them, but I may be staying in some of their locations over the next while. Anyone have any experience with them? Worth forking over the cash?

I signed up for whatever their program was a few years ago. I was staying at an Ibis hotel for two weeks, and the immediate reduction in room rate roughly paid for a year's membership. At some point in the process I earned a free night or free something.

Unfortunately I didn't take advantage of it, but there was a possibility. If the kickback on the Ibis room hadn't paid for the membership, I wouldn't have taken it, but in that case it seemed like a no-brainer.

I received an unsolicited phone call from an Accor sales rep trying to sell me their program. Seemed like there were some good savings if you ever planned to stay at Accor properties, but the offer was for properties in Australia and Asia.

There was no way I was going to fork over A$260 as an "incentive" to stay somewhere.
