Asking for keycard when checking out

In my last few stays in HK since July, the staff at the counter always asked for the keycard back when I check out. Is there are new policy being enforced? I have stayed at the same properties before and never been asked for the keycard.

Not that it would kill me to give them back, I just have the habit of collecting different hotel keycards.

I could understand if it wasn't the generic ones....

The Hard Rock hotels have a penalty on their cards and deduct from your CC if you don't hand them back!

Sometimes I have to ask for two on arrival .... always carry a "spare" or two for the hotels that turn off the lights and air con when you leave the room ....

So you steal keycards !
They're not designed to be consumables and do cost money !

Most of the time when I have a 3 to 5 nights stay and get issued/ask for two cards at reception (so that I can leave one to keep the air con and electricity on when I'm not in the room), housekeeping "steals" the cards at the middle of the stay...

seriously how much keycard cost to the hotel? may be $10 at most.

I have stayed in LM Jakarta. When I returned the key card, they asked me why don't I want to keep it as souvenir.

LM Jakarta has a collection of set key card.

I know this Novotel Century has habit to ask you to return the key card.

For 3* hotel and above, I believe key cards should be treated as consumable.

I'd rather say $1, not 10.

I took a keycard from a boutique hotel in New Orleans more than a decade ago. Made a nice memento surely
These days I always return the keycards - just a little thing I can do to be environmentally friendly. The memento I value most from hotel stays now are those welcome letters.

Do you take the glass in the bathroom as well? After all, it does not cost much money..

you don't get the point. key card can be easily lost.

I never done it with glass, but glass can be broken. I think 4-5 stars hotel will not charge you even if you break the glass.

3 star and below may charge you for it.
