You don't need to stay, you just need to check in at the hotel and check out the next day.
On a more serious note, if it's just reward points you are looking for, have you had any recent stays which you haven't checked in with the Places app? Not sure what the time limit for it. Or, if you must, you can go hire a car from Europcar for a few days, but that's probably even more troublesome than checking in and out of a hotel. Or you could subscribe to the Economist.
If you need status points, then you don't have any other choices apart from going to a hotel, in the new 2017 world. Speaking of which, your status would now run by the calendar year, so whatever status you have achieved in 2016 would be valid till the end of 2017, and your status points would be at zero as of 1 Jan.

Europcar is not a bad way to go. I found that the points do credit faithfully, but it can take some time (over a month in my case, but it was only 250 points). Maybe Hertz offers more points? I will have a fish around today, because I am looking at alternative places to credit car rentals (other than airline programmes, which is why I'm crediting to Accor now).
