That's odd, but my guess is that either the Captain refused to fly the airplane with a mechanical or the crew chose to fly their contract by refusing to "do favors" for the company.

I was on a flight once where the mechanics wrote off the mechanical yet the Captain felt unsafe to fly the plane. That flight eventually canceled. And on several flights crew members had refused to waive their legalities by refusing to work flights that would extend their duty day or coming to work early without meeting minimum rest requirements.
