Switzerland used to be really bad about this, but I finally got stamped on my last trip (both in and out).
Personally I prefer this - best of both worlds. You can ask for a stamp (eg if needed for visa purposes) or not get one as default. I suppose this will change when Switzerland joins Schengen.
