Who can blame the property for wanting to make it less accessible to the masses.

P.S. why not go the whole hog ... forget about the taxi and wait at Barbarini for the hotel shuttle?
What do you do after you get to the Cavalieri in the early morning? Even if I don't get much sleep on the trip, I find that the best way to get over jet lag is to keep going. At the Cavalieri, that usually means dropping my stuff off and going into the city. By walking to the Hilton and taking a bus, it just keeps you going.
That being said, I love saving money when I can regardless of how much I can really afford to spend.
When I fly into Newark, instead of paying $80 for a cab into the city, I take the train for $15 to Penn Station - I stay across the street - all is good and I saved $65.
