I don't see a tactical advantage to gaining UA lowest tier for you, as the benefits are not that tangible. You'll be treated far better on United flights as a Star Alliance Gold because of your Air Canada status, than as a lowly 3P on United. If it was an airline where unlimited upgrades where available (ie delta, nw, usair, etc.) it may be worth it. For your UA flights, I'd credit to Air Canada. American is a good choice for domestic US flights, and opens you up to another alliance with good award availability.
