Hi all, had to sign up just to reply to this thread. I'm very, uh, "committed" to my career as a beer-drinker.

I see a couple of people have mentioned Asahi - that's the name of a brewing company, not a beer, but I'm guessing they mean one of my favourite beers of all time - Asahi Super Dry (ASD)!

Now I'm Australian, so tend to be a "hot weather beer" fan - I like it thin, crisp, clean and refreshing. ASD hits all those for me, it's the clearest, most delicious beer I know. On tap is best, but that'll be rare outside Japan (although there's a few bars in Sydney with it). Some might say I'm some kind of philistine but otherwise, try to get it in cans. Serve as cold as possible for the most refreshing beer I've ever had, my hands down favourite.

If I'm in Australia I drink Crown Lager, which I also really like although it's a little more bitter. Other good-to-great AU beers are Coopers Sparkling Ale, Victoria Bitter (*must* be served very cold), Cascade and Little Creatures.

If Crown isn't available a good backup is Stella or Becks. I used to drink Heineken for this, but went off that some time ago - the local versions we get here aren't very good. I also like Corona when the atmosphere's right.

When in SE Asia I drink their local beers, which I also love, and tend to somehow suit the local environment. Singapore it's Tiger, in HK it's Tsingtao, in BKK .. uh, I can't stand Thai beer and drink imported : )

I don't even want to get into talking about euro beer - I could write an essay. But generally I like any decent german or czech lager, they're the experts and you can pretty much just choose something at random and it's probably pretty nice.

Anyway, no one else has mentioned it (probably to avoid getting into country-bashing) but I just have to warn everyone: My LEAST favourite beer.

The worst beer I have ever tasted in my life is Hite Lager, brewed in Korea. I really don't have words to describe how bad it is, not without being banned, but it's just the most disgusting rat's piss imaginable. For all those who think XXXX or Foster's is bad - it's like Dom Perignon compared to Hite. It's also pretty much the only beer you'll find available on a Korean Air flight after the first couple of hours. Don't be tempted, you'll be embarrassed when you hand the 90% full can back to the FA an hour later.

Beer's a very subjective thing, though, please don't be offended by anything I wrote : ) A case in point, someone mentioned that beeradvocates.com site a while back - I disagree, sometimes strongly, with almost every review I've read on that site. Who's right? We both are. Beer tastes are as individual as the drinker. But try ASD : )
