I don't see why not - interline connections are the entire point of an airline alliance. It's almost certainly doable if the flights are on the same ticket.

I once flew CHC-AKL-SYD-LAX-ORD-IND, and Air New Zealand was able to check me (and my bags) in for all 5 flights in CHC, even though some flights were on UA. I assume other Star Alliance carriers can do the same.

And if you still don't have a boarding pass, I bet if you go the the NH counters at KIX they'll figure something out for you.
